I don’t  know about you…but I  find policy questions throw some  of my students.., specially how one policy  can have a positive impact on one aim and negative on another.

This activity is all about some of the policies under the 1988 Education Reform Act.

The aims of education policy  were stuck on the board.

Students  in small groups had one policy to focus on. They had to consider which aims that policy linked  to..and whether  in a negative or positive way.

They then blu tacked their policy  on the board and draw link arrows to policies and along each arrow note how it was positive or not. Ie, league  tables linked  +ve as a marketisation  strategy for competition and choice. …but -ve as it created sink schools and increased social inequality in social class and attainment.

We then used this to construct peele paragraphs for past paper questions.
