You know when you are sipping your favourite coffee from one of those high street chains (the kind that the 1990s TV show Friends catapulted into our imaginations back in the day). and you are scanning teachery stuff on screen. Then you see that simple idea that just puts a smile on your face whilst the lightbulb, cartoon stylee, is getting turned on in your head. Well this happened earlier this week. I feel awful that I cannot cite the original source – but when I saw this idea I just grinned for England as it is so creative and effective. It’s effective on a number of levels, mainly creativity (with a big dollop of emotional engagement) and also for developing mid-range Bloom skills of ‘Interpretion and Application’. Students need to be mindful of the issue explored and then be selective in considering what they will apply and how. So, to the teacher with this great idea..thankyou. Here’s what we did with it.

Paper-chains

My class have been studying Functionalist theories of crime and deviance – you know the usual stuff from Durkheim, Merton and Erikson. I wanted them to ‘distil’ the essence of their thinking. Their task was to produce a series of functionalist points/explanations/examples and criticisms and chain these together in a logical order that would flow in a paragraph format.

I googled how to make a paper chain and we found a site with visual step by step tips (including – each link needing to be 1″ by 8″ long). They were engrossed in this task. Discussion selections/sequencing….defending positions/challenging each other….and laughing all the way through. It was like Christmas had come early. They loved it. You can see theor chains around the display in my previous post.

Next time I will follow the originator’s idea and award the group with the longest chain a prize. I would also colour code each link (in line with PEELE – Point/Explain/Evidence/Link/Evaluation) in the chain.
